Thomas Satterthwaite  1991

Friend Thomas Hynson Satterthwaite

Tom Satterthwaite died suddenly on July 4, 1991 in Carlisle at age 73.  He had begun attending our Meeting about two years earlier and chose to remain an occasional though characteristic silhouette rather than fully entering the life of the Meeting.  It is only with his death and the meeting to commemorate him that we have taken the measure of our loss.
Satterthwaite, born Dec. 8, 1917, was adopted by Friends Howard and Emma Satterthwaite at age two.  He became a member of Lansdowne Meeting and lived most of his life in Springfield, Delaware County, Pa.
He was a graduate of Springfield High School and Valley Forge Military Academy.  He rose to the rank of a captain in World War II and served in France, Italy and Germany.
Satterthwaite was married to Helen Miller for 41 years until her death in 1982He left Friends when he married and then returned after having raised a family and completed a career as a jeweler.
A well-known fly fisherman, Satterthwaite was an active member of Trout Unlimited, Brotherhood for the Jungle Cock, and a charter member of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum.
He is survived by his companion, Antoinette Kliss, and his two sons and daughters-in-law; R. Bruce and Tracy of Columbus, Oh., and David H. and Janis of Oxford, Pa.
His words were frank and not ingratiating, but his actions were generous.  He was precise, demanding and impatient with the world.  With his jeweler’s skill, he created a rival world of miniatures.  He turned most readily to that world and to the fellowship of fishermen to which he devoted his later years and into which he initiated many young people.
To say more and inflate this minute would be to betray him.
